Lio Sze Mei is a Hong Kong artist who graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2016. Lio’s practice is anchored in exploration of dreams, fairytales and childhood. Taking inspiration from popular children literature such as J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, Lio’s works tap into the mindset of children in a visual dissection of the language of dreams.

Working with canvas and metal plates, Lio creates hauntingly beautiful dreamt up landscapes. Emulating the hazy effects of dream recollection, Lio scratches the surface of brass and copper plates to create a glistening effect, then processes it with ink and oil to create contrast and depth. Her intricate technique is juxtaposed by simple, often isolated subject matters such as a single child, a lost animal, a vintage chandelier.
Lio has recently exhibited in Ink Asia (2019), LO Gallery JCCAC (2019), AM Space (2018), and 1a Space (2017).
